HomeWelcome! I am a Professor in the Department of Communication and the Department of Information Science at Cornell University. I’m also the Director of Graduate Studies for the field of Communication. My research focuses on interpersonal communication in face-to-face and computer-mediated contexts. My goals are to enhance our theoretical understanding of the mechanisms involved in conversational discourse and to apply this theory to the design and evaluation of new communications technologies. My current research areas include intercultural computer-mediated communication, multi-lingual communication, tools to promote energy saving behavior, human-robot interaction, and collaborative intelligence analysis. With my students and collaborators, I examine these issues within a variety of domains, using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. News! I will be co-chairing CHI 2017 with Gloria Mark, Professor, Department of Informatics at U.C. Irvine. CHI is the annual conferences of ACM’s SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction). The 2017 conference will be held May 6-11, 2017 in Denver, Colorado.
